Pula TWR, OK JAG dobrdan ... every day radio contact with Pula TWR begins your flying adventure in Instria CRO when airborn at Medulin LDPM inside the Pula LDPL CTR. Flying in Istria provides lots of possibilities where to fly including costal flights or small islands visits. Nice places to visit are the Lošinj, Unija and Hvar islands.

Rest of ATC communication is in English of course and should be mentioned that Croatia and Slovenia ATCs use better english than their Austrian collegues who uses pretty hard accent making it difficult to understand sometimes. But that is why we were given the SAY AGAIN phrase isn't it? :)

Langing the PULA airport

Custom services are needed when comming from EU and  LDPL Pula airport is due its price politics quite suitable destination with very kind stuff. Estimated costs are about 30 EURO (please see the official web of PULA AD published on AD detail here on PilotSpace) but the final price was unexpectedly cheaper.

Flight plan filing school

Flying Croatia requires flight plan for almost every flight (see AIP GEN 1.7. available from our briefing on EAD Control). Flight plan must be filed when ATC air space used or national boundary crossing. You do not need to file the plan when flying within CTR all the flight. To file flight plan use actual phone number of PULA AD Reporting Office available in the AD AIP.

Few days flying in Croatia makes you quite familiar with flight plan filing and you will find out that flying on flight plan is quite comfortable as you are controlled and told what to do and do not need to request anything if situation allows / e.i. your flight do not change significantly or so. Pilot have more time to navigate and enyoj the flight!

Note the ADRIA VFR routes are not mandatory and you can plan your flight elsewhere.

Required equipment

As there are lot of new reporting point and many others has changed it is very important to use actual maps for both Slovenia and Croatia or make sure your GPS or GNSS is updated!

For example flying near PULA there are several Sieara point (S1 / S8) and you may be suprised the ATC sends you holding any of them when inbound traffic in PULA or paradrop activity takes place in Medulin AD.

Life jackets should be on board when flying over water if landing on the coast or glide to nearest airport is not feasible / see L6 annex of Air law for more precise explanation. At least you have something to hold after successfull ditching waiting for some of the boats to get you. Landing near the beach is recommended if feasible.

Where to fly?

The Unije LDPN airfield lying on the Unija island souhterly of Pula realy worth visiting althoug the landing fees may be higher than in PULA :)) (expect 25 EURO). The airfield is located appx 200m of a very nice beach and pleasant restaurants.

Approaching the Unije LDPN airfield in sight:

Unije in sight

Another destination to visit may be the Vrsar LDPV where you can meet kind people and visit local bar. Landing fees are 25 EURO.

Short field landing

Flying many of the Croatia fields requires short field landing technique so be prepared. For example Unija field with quite bad surface may suprise you otherwise.

Wish happy landings to all of you and nice time spent flying in Croatia!
